Our latest work/projects

Thornbury Silvertop Ash Deck With Custom Bench Seats and Screen

Custom Silvertop Ash timber deck designed and constructed to integrate an existing fig tree, including stepped access, custom vertical batons and built-in seating. The project was completed to the client’s brief, with careful detailing around the tree to allow for growth and a clean, durable finish.

Northcote Theatre Mezzanine Restoration

Northcote Theatre, the first electrified building in the area, required a full heritage restoration of its original mezzanine level.

The mezzanine was in a severely dilapidated state and was carefully dismantled to allow for structural assessment and correction. Original 100-year-old kauri pine floorboards were lifted, repaired where possible, and re-used to return the space to its original form and character.

New structural work was integrated discreetly, with all levels, transitions, and finishes rebuilt to reflect the original construction while meeting current standards.

All works were completed in accordance with Heritage Council Victoria requirements, with a strong focus on conservation, accuracy, and long-term durability.

This was a true heritage project — slow, deliberate, and done properly.

Thornbury Millboard Porch Deck

This project involved constructing a new Millboard porch deck built directly over the existing structure.

The new decking was installed to improve the appearance, durability, and safety of the front entry, while keeping the overall height and layout unchanged. Care was taken around door thresholds, brick piers, and edges to ensure clean lines and comfortable transitions.

Millboard was chosen for its low maintenance, slip resistance, and long-term performance — well suited to a high-use front entry. Concealed fixings and tight detailing give the deck a neat, understated finish that fits the house.

A straightforward upgrade, executed cleanly and properly.

Thornbury Courtyard Deck with landing and staircase

This project involved the demolition of an existing staircase and the design and construction of a new deck and stair layout to improve space, flow, and access to the house.

The original stairs consumed unnecessary space and restricted movement through the yard. A new staircase was designed and repositioned to open up the area while maintaining safe, comfortable access.

To achieve a flush internal–external entry, the deck structure was built low to the concrete slab. All joists were treated with bitumen paint to protect the timber in a low-clearance environment and ensure long-term durability.

The deck layout was carefully planned to integrate an existing tree, preserving it as part of the space rather than cutting around it as an afterthought. Board layout, clearances, and detailing were adjusted to allow the tree to remain healthy while keeping the deck clean and functional.

Westgarth Northcote Extension

This project involved a structural roof remodel, integrating new construction with an existing dwelling.

The original Dutch gable was removed and converted to a full hip roof, allowing the old and new sections of the house to read as one coherent structure. The new roof geometry was carefully set out to tie cleanly into the existing roofline, maintaining correct pitches, load paths, and proportions.

Works included:

  • demolition and alteration of the existing roof structure

  • slab set-out and concrete pour for the new works

  • full timber framing completed to engineering specifications

  • preparation and coordination for frame inspection

  • block laying integrated with the new structural layout

Care was taken throughout to ensure alignment between old and new construction, with accurate set-out and clean junctions across slab, walls, and roof framing.

This stage of the build focused on getting the fundamentals right — structure, geometry, and sequencing — so everything above it works properly.
